On Dec. 11, Netflix added the thriller film Prisoners to its library, and it’s already the No. 1 movie on the streamer! If you’re looking forward to watching it, we must inform you of the parents guide and age rating so that you’ll know if it’s a movie you can watch with kids.
Prisoners is a 2013 film helmed by Academy Award-nominated director Denis Villeneuve. Villeneuve is best known for directing the movies Arrival, Blade Runner 2049 and Dune. His next movie to be released will be Dune: Part Two, which is slated to come out on Nov. 3, 2023. In addition, Raised by Wolves creator Aaron Guzikowski wrote the screenplay.
It’s about a desperate father who goes on a search for his 6-year-old daughter and her friend after they are abducted. While scrambling for clues, the father finds himself clashing with the lead detective on the case and decides to take matters into his own hands.
Hugh Jackman plays the father, Keller Dover, and Jake Gyllenhaal portrays Detective Loki. More of the cast includes Viola Davis, Maria Bello, Terrence Howard, Melissa Leo, Paul Dano, Dennis Christopher, Dylan Minnette, and many others.
Prisoners is rated R, meaning it may be inappropriate for ages under 17. It was given this maturity rating for disturbing violent content, including torture. Strong language is also used throughout the film. You can also expect graphic violence shown, excessive drinking and drugs used by some of the characters, mild sexual references, bloody content, various weapon use, and a brief portrayal of suicide.
Overall, this film contains many frightening and intense scenes that parents would consider inappropriate for younger audiences to watch. We strongly recommend watching Prisoners when no kids are around. You can always turn on a kids’ movie or show to keep them occupied. Luckily, our favorite streamer has tons of options to choose from.
