Firefly Lane season 2 has finally arrived, and it’s time to catch up with Tully Hart and Kate Mularkey throughout the years. Katherine Heigl, Sarah Chalke, Ali Skovbye, and Roan Curtis are back to bring the complex story of the lifelong best friends to life.
Based on the book of the same name by Kristin Hannah, Firefly Lane follows Tully and Kate’s complicated journey as best friends, from when they first meet in high school up to their present day lives as adults.
The second season of the series picks up following the season 1 cliffhanger, which hinted at an estrangement in the present day between the inseparable pair. What could have happened to tear them apart, and will they find their way back to each other?
In order to better understand their present and their future, we also have to learn about their past. But exactly when does Firefly Lane season 2 take place? What years does the new season cover in Tully and Kate’s lives? Here’s everything you need to know about the timeline!

Firefly Lane primarily takes place in the 1970s, the 1980s, and the 2000s. More specifically, Skovbye and Curtis portray Tully and Kate as teenagers in 1974 through 1976. The characters meet in 1974, and the second season features the American bicentennial, which took place on July 4, 1976, and their junior year of high school.
The storyline where Tully and Kate (this time played by Heigl and Chalke with the use of wigs, makeup, and some digital de-aging) work together at KPOC takes place in the 1980s. In season 2, it’s about 1985 and onward when the best friends work at the news station.
We also have the opportunity to see a glimpse of Tully and Kate in the 1990s in Firefly Lane season 2. The season flashes ahead to the early ’90s, when Tully has moved up in her career and Kate has just become a mother to Marah.
But the present day in Firefly Lane obviously isn’t our present day. Tully and Kate’s adulthood, where they’re about in their mid-40s, takes place in 2003, 2004, and 2005. There are plenty of cultural references and dated technology (remember the Blackberry?) to give us a sense of place.
The second and final season moves through time much more than the first season. There’s a flashback all the way to 1959 when Tully was a newborn baby and Cloud (Beau Garrett) knocks on the door of the Binswanger home. Time will only tell what the timeline will bring in part 2.
