Richard Pierce Havens, an American singer-songwriter and guitarist, was born on January 21, 1941, and he passed away on April 22, 2013. When he was 20 years old, Havens moved from his native Brooklyn to Manhattan’s Greenwich Village in search of creative inspiration. He integrated folk, soul and rhythm and blues into his music. He frequently tuned his rhythm guitar in open tunings. In addition to providing the voice for the GeoSafari toys, Havens performed as the opening act at Woodstock and sang many jingles for television advertisements.
The solo performances by Havens quickly gained recognition outside of the Village’s folk music community. He collaborated with Bob Dylan’s manager Albert Grossman to secure a record deal with the Verve Folkways label, which would later become Verve Forecast, after finishing two records for Douglas Records.
Havens continued to travel and put out new music throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He produced advertisements for Amtrak, Coca-Cola, NBC, CBS, and ABC. Havens also performed the theme song for the cotton industry, “The Fabric of Our Lives,” as well as corporate commercials for Folgers and Maxwell House Coffee.
