Acclaimed Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín is back with his tenth movie (and eighth film made in Chile), El Conde. His latest movie is a satirical horror-comedy about the Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet. In El Conde, it’s revealed Pinochet never died, but instead has lived for over 250 years as a vampire.
Larraín has directed several historic, Academy Award-nominated films like Jackie starring Natalie Portman and Spencer starring Kristen Stewart. He enjoys crafting movies that explore power dynamics, making El Conde the perfect choice for the esteemed director.
Per the press notes, “The filmmaker had been toying with the idea of Pinochet as a figure that keeps appearing through history, our imagination and our nightmares. Vampires do not die or disappear, exactly like the crimes and thefts of a dictator who never faced justice.”
In addition to directing, Larraín also co-wrote the film’s script alongside Guillermo Calderón. Calderón is a respected screenwriter, playwright, and actor who has previously collaborated with Larraín and boasts an extensive career in the theater and literature world.
Shot entirely in Chile, one of the interesting visual choices Larraín made for this movie is filming the entire movie in black-and-white to promote a sense of “unreality” and further accentuate the movie’s farcical and visually striking style. Feeding his appetite for evil to sustain his existence. After two hundred and fifty years of life, Pinochet has decided to stop drinking blood and abandon the privilege of eternal life. He can no longer bear that the world remembers him as a thief. Despite the disappointing and opportunistic nature of his family, he finds new inspiration to continue living a life of vital and counterrevolutionary passion through an unexpected relationship."
