Bridgerton season 3 might not yet have a release date, but throughQueen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story fans are once again whisked away into the magical world inspired by Julia Quinn’s bestselling novels.
Unlike in Bridgerton where the show is built around the Bridgerton family, Queen Charlotte — you guessed it — revolves around the early life of Queen Charlotte. The show focuses on how her marriage to King George creates a societal shift, leading to the creation of the world of the Ton, which is inherited by the characters in Bridgerton.
At the heart of the show, though, is a deep dive into the complex nature of her marriage to King George and how it sparked a great love story. Throughout the show, we get the chance to see how the pair’s love first formed and the hardships they faced primarily in regard to George’s mental illness which is beautifully handled with care.
As Charlotte and George’s love story unfolds in the past timeline, the show also weaves in storylines from the present-day timeline in the Bridgerton universe. In this timeline, George’s health is far from ideal as the King’s days seem to be limited.
Across the episodes, there are many moments in which Charlotte expresses fear that something has happened to George in the present timeline which is likely to cause concern among audiences over whether the series ends with his death.
Warning spoilers ahead.
Although there is reason for concern across the show, King George does not die during Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story and is still alive by the time the show comes to a close. In fact, the series ends with an emotional scene that will tug at your heartstrings involving both Charlotte and George.
During one of George’s manic episodes in the past timeline, Charlotte finds him under the bed. He says the heavens cannot find him under the bed and tells her there is no cure, sometimes he will be there and sometimes he will not. During the exchange, he says he wouldn’t blame for her for leaving as he’s half a man and can only offer half a life. Rather than walking away, Charlotte says she is his queen and will never leave him. Together they are whole.
This moment comes full circle in the closing scene of the series when Charlotte goes to see George in the present timeline. He’s in a fit and does not recognize her, so she goes under the bed. He joins her and recognizes her, which is when she tells him the exciting news that his line will live on, to which he interjects that “our” line will continue. They kiss and he comments that Charlotte did not go over the wall, to which she says, “No George, I did not go over the wall.”
It was such a sweet nod to their first meeting way back in the premiere and was a beautiful way to cap off the story. While they could have easily ended the season with his death, the closing scene was such a more effective end note for the show in showcasing the pair’s unwavering love for one another.
