Do Kate and Johnny get back together in Firefly Lane season 2 part 1?

At the end of Firefly Lane season 1, Kate Mularkey (Sarah Chalke) and Johnny Ryan (Ben Lawson) finally give in to their mutual attraction and start hooking up in the 1980s. But in the 2000s, their relationship isn’t in the best place. While in the 1980s, Kate and Johnny were getting hot and heavy, in 2004, they were dealing with the aftermath of their divorce.

Major spoilers ahead for Firefly Lane season 2 part 1

Firefly Lane season 2 part 1 picks up after Johnny is injured by the IED explosion in Iraq. Thankfully, he survives with some minor injuries. But the accident leaves Johnny traumatized, and he starts experiencing flashbacks and PTSD at home. Johnny pushes Kate away and further complicates their relationship by refusing to admit anything is wrong.

Adding more fuel to the fire is the return of Charlotte (India de Beaufort), a former KPOC intern with a crush on Johnny, who worked closely with him in Iraq. Will Johnny move on with Charlie?

Good news for fans rooting for Kate and Johnny, they do get back together in the present-day storyline. After Johnny goes to therapy to deal with his PTSD, he realizes he still loves Kate. In the season 2 part 1 finale, Kate finally accepts his proposal, agreeing to get re-married.

However, while the 1980s storyline starts strong for the couple, they break up after Kate realizes they don’t want the same things in life, i.e., marriage and children. The season ends with Johnny trying to fix things with Kate, but he’s too late. She’s already moved on with a new guy named Theo and left with him for a trip to Europe.

But that was in the 1980s, so even though that segment ends on a “cliffhanger,” we already know what happens with the couple in the future. In 2005, Kate and Johnny are happily together again and newly engaged for the second time.
