Formed as the New Jersey Americans in the ABA, the team spent much of its existence as the New Jersey Nets before taking the Brooklyn name in 2012.

Behind star point guard Jason Kidd, the team reached two straight NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003 but lost both times. In 2021 they formed a dream team of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden but the team never lived up to expectations.
